8 Things to Know About CBD Oil and Anxiety

Anxiety is a common and sometimes debilitating condition that affects 40 million American adults. In fact, anxiety is one of the most common psychological conditions.

Many patients impacted by anxiety struggle to find a medication that is effective against the condition without causing harmful side effects or addiction. Cannabidiol (CBD) oil is a possible anxiety treatment that has gotten increasingly more attention.

The following are eight things anxiety patients need to know about CBD oil and its ability to treat their condition.

1. Management of Serotonin Levels

The way CBD oil and many other anxiety medications work is by regulating serotonin levels. Mental conditions, including anxiety and depression, are linked with abnormally low serotonin levels.

CBD oil treats anxiety patients by interacting with the serotonin receptors in the brain. Scientists think CBD oil may make CB1 and CB2 receptors better able to react to the serotonin that’s already present in the patient’s brain, thereby calming the patient and relieving feelings of anxiety.

2. Avoidance of Stronger Drugs

Traditionally, medications known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) or tranquilizers like alprazolam helped treat anxiety. However, these drugs are stronger than CBD oil and are known for severe side effects such as seizures, headaches, vomiting, and depression.

Many patients wish to avoid drugs like SSRI drugs and tranquilizers when treating their depression. As opposed to traditional drugs, CBD oil is relatively mild and all-natural.

3. Lack of Psychoactive Effects

Patients sometimes make the incorrect assumption that CBD oil makes patients high when taken to treat anxiety. However, CBD oil does not have any psychoactive effects, despite the fact that it is from cannabis plants.

4. Lack of Severe Side Effects

While some mild side effects have been reported by patients taking CBD oil, these side effects are benign when compared with side effects from SSRIs and antidepressants like sertraline.

Patients taking CBD oil report occasional mild side effects like drowsiness, appetite changes, and dizziness.

5. Methods of Consumption

Anxiety patients interested in CBD oil should know that they have numerous options for how they take CBD oil. The two easiest ways to take CBD oil are orally and topically.

CBD oil can be taken orally by swallowing a few drops of it or adding it to food. Topical preparations are spread on the body and absorbed through the skin.

6. Variety of Anxiety Types Treated

CBD oil helps in the treatment of numerous types of anxiety. Anxiety is a complicated condition, but CBD oil has the potential for treating most types of anxiety disorder including post-traumatic stress disorder, social anxiety, panic disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

7. Legality of CBD Oil

Some patients are concerned about the legality of CBD oil because they know it is a substance derived from marijuana.

While marijuana oil and THC are not yet legal in all 50 states, CBD oil derived from hemp is now legal in all 50 states. This means that anxiety patients in the United States can legally take CBD oil regardless of where they live.

8. Non-Addictive Nature of CBD Oil

Traditional anxiety medications such as SSRIs and tranquilizers are known for being highly physically addictive.

Traditional anxiety medications are addictive because their effects lessen in intensity over time so that patients build up a tolerance. This means that patients need to take more as time goes on to get the same effects.

CBD oil is not physically addictive. Doctors advise against taking SSRIs and tranquilizers over the long term because of the addictive nature of these drugs. The non-addictive nature of CBD oil makes it a safer long-term anxiety treatment than SSRIs and tranquilizers.
